Pre-Construction Project Manager / Design Manager - Education 

 

Cordoba is seeking a Pre-Construction Project Manager to support its Education-Sector on a Cal State University campus.

This position plans, organizes, and directs the planning and design activities in a higher-education school environment.  Managing projects involving Small-Capital new and/or renovations. Position requires experience to lead design through use of a design professional team, providing quality review, comment, and implementation of State standards, policies, and procedures. Qualified candidates will have a minimum of 10 years full time paid professional experience managing the facilities design or the planning and coordination of capital projects that include the overall design, contract administration, cost estimating, and scheduling activities (5 years of this experience must be with the design, planning, and construction of educational facilities or similar public agencies).

Responsibilities

  • Manages, develops, and coordinates the State’s design process for the Design and Construction Services Department to ensure that plans meet functional program, technical, budgetary, environmental, and legal requirements.
  • Manages multiple projects through interaction with Architects, consultants, and State personnel from project conception through draft to final review, approval, and handoff to a Construction Management team.
  • Oversees the building design process to ensure compliance with the State’s standards and guidelines by working with design professionals and various State administrators and End-Users to ensure that new and modernized facilities meet educational and building standards requirements. Knowledge of CBC code is preferred.
  • Establishes and follows a process to identify and select the architectural firm best suited for each project based on the firms’ qualifications and ability to meet performance standards.
  • Provides Architects with clear and consistent direction regarding the goals and objectives, standards, site, schedule, and budget for each project.
  • Establishes and follows an effective and efficient design review process to ensure that the design meets the overall goals and objectives for the project, provides maximum value for dollars budgeted, and is appropriate and enduring to meet the functional needs of the District, the local community, and the environment
  • Ensures that decisions are made in a timely manner to maintain project schedules.
  • Ensures that all steps within the project are documented and that the documentation meets legal requirements.
  • Review design changes submitted to ensure the project remains within budget.
  • Recommends architectural firm assignment from an established list of pre-qualified architectural firms.
  • Manages projects through the acceptance of Campus Architect, in preparation for construction procurement.
  • Coordinates with a host of professional staff who support the design function for the District.
  • Develop continuing education opportunities, i.e., seminars and workshops, to learn and share up-to-date information on working with architects and contractors.
  • Coordinates project activities with other State organizational branches and departments such as the Inspection, Environmental Health and Safety, Design Services, Maintenance and Operations, Construction Services, and any State’s FF&E requirements.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from a recognized college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, or Construction Management.  Supplementary years of experience in design and construction may be substituted for the education on a 1:1 year ratio.
  • Minimum 10 years of paid professional experience managing the facilities design or the planning and coordination of capital projects that include the overall design, contract administration, cost estimating, and scheduling activities.
  • Five years of experience must be in designing, planning, coordinating and constructing educational facilities or similar public works projects.
  • Salary Range: $135,000 to $150,000 per year.
  • Location: Long Beach, CA – This role is 100 percent onsite in Long Beach, CA 90840.

Preferred Licenses and Certificates:

  • A valid Certificate of Registration as an Architect by the California State Architectural Board or Professional Engineer by the State Board for Professional Engineers, or a Certified Construction Manager (CCM) are preferred.
